In politics, they say, perception is reality. This mantra owes its origin to Lee Atwater, a political consultant and strategist for several American presidents. In 1991, at the age of 40, he died of brain cancer but his approach to political communication based on a cynical mining of emotional wedge issues lives on to this day. What are the social costs of such manipulation and what can possibly introduce reality back into international politics?
